Happy 2010!

December is undoubtedly the most enjoyable month of the entire year. It is a season for celebration, and by default, celebration is associated with indulging in glorious food (overeating), shopping(buying things you don't need) and catching up with friends  (gossiping).

I was put to the test having more than a week off guided yoga practice and left to fend for myself in the parallel world of existence, one filled with worldly temptations. It didn't help that I was back home in Penang, the capital of cheap and good food. How was a trainee vegetarian going to survive such a cruel ordeal? At the scrumptious Christmas buffet dinner, I only had soup, salad, pastry crust (from the chicken pie) and cream tartlets while the rest chomped down on turkey, roast beef and roast lamb. At lunch two days ago at my favourite restaurant I had fried plain tofu and vegetables instead of their famous steamed pomfret. At the Japanese restaurant last night, I had to pick off the salads of my parents' bento boxes while they polished off the grilled eel roll and teriyaki salmon. That was only my first test, which I barely scraped through.

Ironically, when n KL (the shopping capital of Malaysia), I rarely spend my afternoons in malls, doing what most girls love  - shopping. Just one trip to the mall in Penang, and I end up with two new tops (which I did not need). And with that, I failed my second test.

Of course with holiday cheer comes numerous get-togethers with friends. And when girls get together, they do what they are best at, which is gossip. I have been very self aware for the past 2 months about the words that leave my mouth. In yoga, the concept of Ahimsa or Non-Violence does not stop at non-violence in action but also in speech. However, my third test put me smack in the moment of excitement meeting up with friends I had not seen in months. At that point, the shield of awareness weakened and I found myself bathing in the addictive lure of juicy chitchat.

Now it is clear to me what I had to set as my new year's resolution. Just one simple world - DISCPILINE

Happy 2010 to everyone.
Let the journey to another great year begin!
